Manufacturing Ceramic and Associated Products

There are two 'routes' within the Level 2 NVQ.  If the Apprentice is employed in a job where products are made/decorated mostly by hand, they choose the hand-led route.  If they make/decorate products by machine, they should choose the PMO route   

 

Hand-led route

 

Mandatory units (all to be achieved)

1        Prepare for manufacturing ceramic and associated products

2        Create and maintain effective working relationships in ceramic and associated products manufacturing

3        Comply with Health and Safety laws and company safety requirements in ceramic and associated products manufacturing

4        Contribute to improvements in ceramic and associated products manufacturing

 

Option units (a minimum of ONE to be achieved)

20      Process materials to make plastic clay, slip or glaze for ceramic and associated products manufacturing

21      Form or decorate ceramic and associated products by removal of material

22      Form or decorate ceramic and associated products by adding material

23      Form ceramic and associated products by shaping or moulding

24      Form ceramic and associated products by cutting

25      Form ceramic and associated products from liquid slip or cold cast material

26      Form ceramic and associated products by joining or assembling

27      Form ceramic products by throwing on the potters’ wheel

28      Decorate ceramic and associated products by applying lithographs or transfers (simple and complex)

29      Decorate ceramic and associated products by applying colour, glaze or precious metal

30      Decorate ceramic and associated products by surface alteration

31      Model items for the production of ceramic and associated products

32      Trim, fettle and smooth formed ceramic and associated products (simple and complex shapes)

33      Select and grade ceramic and associated products (simple and complex shapes/patterns)

34      Make complex production moulds for ceramic and associated products manufacturing

35      Apply a protective coating of glaze, slip or varnish to the surface of ceramic and associated products

36      Load and prepare the chamber for de-airing cold cast products

37      De-air and cure cold cast products

38      Load and prepare the kiln for firing ceramic products

39      Fire ceramic products using a kiln

 

 

PMO route

 

Mandatory units (all to be achieved)

2.11    Producing products by processing

2.15    Producing packaged products

2.16    Making products using computer controlled equipment

2.17    Manufacturing products using combined manufacturing operations

2.18    Controlling manufacturing operations

2.03    Transferring materials

2.22    Carrying out inspection and testing activities

8        Place goods and materials into storage in ceramic and associated products manufacturing
