Apprenticeships are training programmes for young people aged between 16 and 24 who have already left full time education or are already in employment. Nationally designed and covering a variety of occupations, Apprenticeships provide young people with a combination of on and off-the-job training whilst they are being paid.
There are two levels of Apprenticeships: the Apprenticeship and the Advanced Apprenticeship. Typically they take between one and three years to complete.
Apprenticeships are designed to provide an integrated programme of learning. Apprentices acquire the skills, knowledge and understanding that employers need. An additional benefit is that the Apprentice also learns how to apply their new skills as they learn on-the-job.
The completion of an Apprenticeship framework shows both current and potential employers that the Apprentice has achieved competence in the skills covered by the Apprenticeship, has demonstrated the knowledge required by the Apprenticeship and has attained the level of transferable skills required by all Apprenticeships.
The content of each Apprenticeship is designed by Sector Skills Councils, Sector Bodies and their employers in accordance with the design principles of agreed guidelines (The Apprenticeship Blueprint) They work with awarding bodies, providers and employers to identify suitable qualifications for use within the frameworks.
